If you would have asked me years ago about the possibility of wearing a dress crafted from a rubber foam, I would have thought , perhaps, that you were in need of a rubber room. But technology changes things up, and creates new trends in every arena.
I found a neoprene dress while vacationing in Mexico. To my surprise the soft, foamy texture was delightful against my skin. I know that this fabric has been used for some time now for things like surfing gear, and laptop sleeves, but the array of dresses this season, crafted of this weirdly desirable fabric is fresh.
Neoprene takes color well, and once dyed, is resistant to fading. I think what attracts me to these spongy dresses and jackets are the bold patterns, some computer generated, in keeping with the hi-tech vibe. My favorites are from Clover Canyon. I will follow this up with a "Shop It" post.
Here is another photo of me wearing this dress, in my hotel lobby. Sadly, not one of my better photos, but I am still grateful to the concierge who was willing to take this shot!
and a close-up here:
Always a front-runner, DKNY started experimenting with neoprene in 2004 and this year, neoprene has been seen on the likes of Kim Kardashian West and Lady Gaga ( no surprise there, as she has also worn outfits made of meat...)
Quicksilver is exploring a neoprene fabric that is made with a sustainable biorubber! I certainly applaud that. I wonder if neoprene, given its durability, and ability to take color well, may make some inroads in the (mostly) black jacket market currently dominated by leather and pleather?
I was happy to be in a warm climate for many reasons last week. The first is most obvious, the perfect sunny days were so welcomed! But I also enjoyed getting a peek of clothes in a country where most of the clothes are summery and colorful. Having come from NY to Mexico, it is ironic that I found this dress at a store called Soho in Cancun.
And yes, this is me, perhaps not in one of my finer moments, but the glass tile floor was so pretty, and the sales clerk was amused... so my last pic should put a smile,( or a wince) on your face:
Outfit details: Neoprene dress, private label by Soho in Cancun. Vintage rhinestone and tassel bracelet from STA in NY, NY. Black and white clutch via Mandees- NY, NY. Black lace pumps via Soho, Cancun. Green ring also from STA , 1318 Madison Avenue- NY, NY.
So ladies, what do you think of this fabric? Have you seen the neoprene collection from Clover Canyon? Do you think there is a future in rubber fashion ? I wonder if this material is better suited to spring than summer due to it insulating properties. I can certainly see it for Autumn-Winter 2015 in jewel tones and richly hued jackets and dresses, and separates. Thoughts?
I apologize for disrupting your last-minute shopping mania. Now go back to Asos, Zappos, and Sharper Image and finish up- time is running out. Clickety click ladies!
