Spread like a tablecloth across the fashion mags and runways, is the time-honored gingham check. Steeped in nuanced nostalgia, with a tendency for sweetness, this can be a style challenge. Am I game? Check!
The full skirt in drapey rayon is paired with its matching crop top. Traditionally the gingham check is done in cottons or fabrics that are a bit stiff, with looks that can be equally stiff, or cutesy. Today it is rendered in organza and found in everything from ball gowns to cropped pants for summer at the resort. For my look, I simply added bold booties in black and white, giving me both cheek and height. Then I added a graphic clutch in a slightly abstract pattern, based on the gingham check, and let my sass out to play.
I topped the look off with a wool cardi with leather trim that I have owned for eons. Below, I wore it sans sweater and imagined how warm it will be soon. ( it is snowing today in New York....again!)
I was photographed speaking to an older woman who curiously like my shoes. I was pleased because I am pretty certain these will get mixed reviews. What could I do but smile? These shoes are the very ones that made me look so tall in two prior posts, adding 5 full inches to my stature. Stare if you must, I love them. They are comfortable too, with the platform, and the mesh is cooling, making it work for this season.
Below are some photos of some of the details.

What do you think of the gingham check? I have been wearing it for 50 years, so today I thought I would style it in a different way than I have worn before. I like it in its traditional shirt and capris, too, but wanted to share a version that is a bit trendy. Will you go gingham this season? If so, will it be a well loved piece from your closet, or something new? How will you style it?
