This is a favorite outfit of mine because each piece is so versatile. I have been looking for a sleeveless vest for so long, and finally found mine at Bolton's in Manhattan's Upper east Side. It is by Philosophy Republic Clothing, and it is just the right length, sort of man- tailored and chic. This is the sort of piece I will add to lace shorts, and more feminine pieces, to give it some contrast and sharpness.
The handbag that I am wearing in this photo and the one below is not Hermes. It does look like Hermes! I was once stopped in a restaurant and a well heeled patron exclaimed it was the "most fabulous Hermes Bag she had even seen!" Indeed the lovely bag, now vintage, is exceedingly well crafted, the hardware gleaming and the leather a beautiful black patina. It is made by Le Gout de Jour, located on the prestigious corner of Rue Cambon and Rue Saint Honore. ( according to google) 31, Rue Cambon is the iconic and historic birthplace of Chanel.
Now, you should know I did NOT get this in Paris, but rather on eBay France, about 12 years ago. I spent a lot of time on that sight and bought some beautiful bags. Many of the bags I found, and ultimately bought, were NOT AVAILABLE to be purchased to buyers in the US. However, I used google translate and asked politely in French if they would consider selling it to me, that my rating was %100, and that I would be happy to pay shipping and handling fees. This worked almost everytime! So this bag, which is not Hermes, but is supremely beautiful, and as well made ( that is a large claim...but it does seem that way to me) cost me just over $100!
I used this strategy in eBay Spain, too, and bought many beautiful "bolsos". In French I purchased many lovely Sac a main's.... I had a great variety to choose from, but it did take some patience to read and understand the foreign languages.
My patience and good verbal skills paid off. I would suggest you try this to... you will see many extraordinary handbags this way. I memorized many handy phrases and profusely thanked the sellers, leaving the highest feedback in both English, French, and Spanish! Tips to buy Hermes : look in France, look for vintage, and also look at wonderful models such as Bolide and Plume. They go for much less and are so elegant!
I will share more tips soon for shopping on eBay, but this was my most successful strategy. It is also better to look for well-maintained vintage if you are shopping for Hermes. Also, make sure you ask about odor problems... There is a lot more issues with copies in NEW Hermes bags. I did find two vintage and authentic Hermes Kelly bags, and other Hermes bags, too just by following the tips I shared, Some of my favs are not Hermes, though.
Okay, back to my happy walk around my neighborhood. The day was glorious, the temps making out at 74 degrees, and the breeze light and airy. My bow shoes are Ferragamo, and I bought them secondhand in East Hampton at LVIS. The fit like they are made for me and the heel is acceptable for walking in Manhattan. You will see my Hermes twilly knotted around my wrist!
The next group of photos are with my Hermes Kelly in orange. This was bought full price at the flagship store, by my sister as a gift, since I was so sick at the time! How generous is that! I like the pop of orange with my indigo-black and white color palette.
Now I am a bit further down the street, carrying the Black Le Gout du Jour. My friend is carrying my Hermes as she is snapping these photos, and I am surprised they came out this well! Ah, what one can accomplish with an Hermes bag on one's arm!
If you look carefully I have the lovely bag backwards! OOPs! Now when I do wear my Kelly bags, I do wear them backwards in the city, depending on where I am. I often do not want the tell- tale straps and padlock to be so visible!
I love this vest and my cuffed jeans, they are so comfortable! I do think the shoes, vest, bag, and Twilly bracelet adds some polish! I do hope sincerely that this does not come off as a showy post... There are so many bags I have bought for under 200USD and some under 10USD that I love and cherish, too. I hope you find these suggestions : tips to buy Hermes, and other bags useful. I will do a longer, more complete post one of these days. But this can get you started. But always beware: if it seems too good to be true, it always is!
